This week One Roof was granted the South Eastern Regional Community Service Award. The award, presented by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, is in the area of Global Poverty.
One Roof will be officially honored during the 79th South Eastern Regional Conference of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. One Roof and other recipients will be recognized during the Public Program, an annual event to acknowledge outstanding contributions individuals and organizations have made to the community.
The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, with a mission of “service to all mankind,’’ named One Roof an award recipient after becoming aware of their mission and work to end homelessness –particularly during the annual Project Homeless Connect, which provides services that break down barriers to leaving homelessness. Michelle Farley, executive director of One Roof, was notified of the award earlier this week, and was enthusiastic about what it meant to the population One Roof serves.
“Well the AKAs really get it, and understand the need for long-term life changing services to the homeless, rather than only providing comfort services,” says Farley. “They have shown great awareness, not only to the current homeless population that is a large percentage African American, but also to this new demographic–which includes increasingly more women and women with children.”
The 79th South Eastern Regional Conference of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority will take place March 10-13 at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex. One Roof will be awarded during the Public program on Thursday, March 10, 7:00 p.m.
