Transgender 101

This is a free informational, educational workshop for One Roof member agencies intended to raise awareness of transgender issues in the homeless community. The workshop is scheduled for Friday, October 4, 2013, from 8:30am-2:30pm. Lunch will be provided, as well as coffee, water, and snacks.

The workshop will be conducted by Dr. Jay A. Irwin, a Medical Sociologist in the department of Sociology & Anthropology at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Dr. Irwin specializes in LGBT health, transgender identity, sexuality, mental health, and homelessness. Dr. Irwin is published in Social Science & Medicine, Journal of Homosexuality, Journal of Gay and Lesbian Mental Health, Women’s Health Issues, and Journal of General Internal Medicine, among others. He has also published community reports on both homeless and LGBT health.

Dr. Irwin is also Associate Director for the Midlands Sexual Health Research Collaborative (MSHRC) housed at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. MSHRC is an interdisciplinary, collaborative team dedicated to research and advocacy of sexuality and sexual health knowledge. He is also a member of the Professional Transgender Resource Network of Nebraska (PTRN), a group of medical providers, lawyers, researchers, and educators dedicated to connecting transgender Nebraskans to supportive and knowledgeable services. Dr. Irwin is a native Alabamian who received his PhD in Medical Sociology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2009.
