One Roof provides the metropolitan Birmingham area with a dedicated social worker who assists men and women who are experiencing homelessness, as well as men and women leaving prison, with applying for Social Security and Disability Benefits. This program is called SOAR (SSI/SSDI Outreach Access and Recovery).
What is SOAR?
SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access, and Recovery (SOAR) is a program designed to increase access to SSI/SSDI for eligible adults who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness and have a mental illness, medical impairment, and/or a co-occurring substance use disorder. One Roof’s SSI/SSDI Application Specialist, Keyana Lewis, has been utilizing the SOAR method for 9 years. She is a also a statewide SOAR trainer.
The SSI/SSDI application process is difficult for individuals to navigate. The national approval rating for first time SSI/SSDI applications is around 28%. For the homeless community, the approval rating is closer to 10-15% for first application. However, using the SOAR program, One Roof’s SSI/SSDI Application Specialist has an over 90% success rate!
Why SOAR for incarcerated individuals?
Many homeless individuals report having been incarcerated at some point. Since former inmates are excluded from many forms of public assistance and income can be difficult to obtain, these individuals are particularly vulnerable to experiencing homelessness or reoffending so that they can be housed in prison. SOAR is a vital tool for preventing and ending homelessness for those individuals as well as for decreasing recidivism rates.
