How do we address mental health awareness?
… Mental Health Awareness
May 18, 2023
Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act, and helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental illnesses are disorders, ranging from mild to severe, that affect a person’s thinking, mood, and/or behavior. (SAMHSA)
Friends and family can be important influences to help someone get the treatment and services they need by:

  • Reaching out and letting them know you are available to help
  • Helping them access mental health services
  • Help them learn self-care and coping techniques
  • Learning and sharing facts about mental health, especially if you hear something that isn't true
  • Treating them with respect, just as you would anyone else
  • Refusing to define them by their diagnosis or using labels such as "crazy", instead use person-first language
May is Mental Health Awareness Month
Together with organizations like NAMI and SAMHSA, join the national movement to fight stigma, provide support, educate the public, and advocate for policies to raise awareness about mental health.

Another way to raise awareness is through getting involved in a Mental Health First Aid program by taking a course or learning how to become a certified instructor.
